Step 3 · Aftercare

Well cared for, beautifully healed.

Good aftercare is essential for a beautifully healed tattoo. With us, you choose between two ways of healing. Both are safe and effective, as long as you follow the guidelines carefully.

Healed black & grey tiger tattoo on the arm

How healing works

  1. Right after the session

We carry out the aftercare treatment and explain everything step by step.

  2. After ± 2 hours

Traditional: film off, wash and apply a thin layer of balm.

  3. Day 5 to 6

Second Skin: remove the film in the shower, then continue with traditional aftercare.

  4. Weeks 2 to 4

Your tattoo has healed. Full skin recovery can take a little longer.

  5. Forever

SPF 50 in the sun keeps your tattoo sharp and vibrant.

Option 2

Aftercare with Second Skin

Second Skin is a breathable, self-adhesive protective film that shields your new tattoo from external influences. The film supports the natural healing process and makes the first days of aftercare easier.

Benefits of Second Skin

  • Your tattoo dries out less quickly

After tattooing, we apply a thin layer of nourishing balm. With Second Skin, that care stays on the skin for longer, so your tattoo dries out less quickly.

  • Protection against dirt and bacteria

A new tattoo is an open wound. Second Skin forms a protective barrier, giving dirt and bacteria less of a chance.

  • Optimal protection in the first days

The film protects your tattoo for the first 5 to 6 days. By the time you remove it, the skin is often well into the healing process.

  • Less daily care

Normally you wash a new tattoo and apply balm several times a day. With Second Skin, the film temporarily takes over much of that.

  • No stains on clothes or bedding

For the first 24 to 48 hours, a tattoo can release fluid, excess ink and a little blood. That's normal. Second Skin keeps your clothes and bedding clean.

How long do you leave Second Skin on?

We recommend 5 to 6 days. Remove the film earlier if:

  • the film comes loose and no longer fully covers the tattoo;
  • an extreme amount of fluid or ink builds up under the film;
  • the skin becomes unusually red, warm, swollen or irritated.

Was ordinary cling film used? Then remove it after about 2 hours and start traditional aftercare straight away.

How to remove Second Skin

Ideally, remove the film in the shower or under running lukewarm water.

  1. Wash your hands First wash your hands thoroughly with soap, so no bacteria reach your tattoo.
  2. Loosen a corner Start gently at an edge or corner of the film.
  3. Peel the film off slowly Pull gently and at a low angle along the skin. This prevents irritation.
  4. Wash and care for your tattoo Wash with lukewarm water and pH-neutral, unscented soap. Pat dry with a clean towel or kitchen roll and apply a thin layer of aftercare balm.

From this point on, follow the traditional aftercare.

Frequently asked questions about Second Skin

Can I shower with Second Skin?

Yes, you can shower as normal. Do avoid long showers and very hot water, as these can make the film come loose.

Can I swim with Second Skin?

No. We advise against swimming until your tattoo has fully healed. Swimming pools, lakes, the sea, hot tubs and spas contain bacteria or chemicals that can disrupt healing.

Can I sleep with Second Skin?

Yes. Second Skin protects your tattoo from friction and keeps the skin clean while you sleep.

Can I exercise with Second Skin?

Yes, but ideally give your tattoo 48 to 72 hours' rest before you do any intense exercise. Avoid exercises that put a lot of pressure or friction on the tattoo. Notice a lot of fluid under the film after heavy sweating? Then remove it and start traditional aftercare.
